Email Archive - First Storm - Pacific                    Prev     Next
Note: this information changes with time and therefore it's only relevant for a limited amount of time.
This email was sent at 7:44pm on Sat 5/27/06.
The First Named Storm of 2006 is alive...
...in the Pacific. (GRIN)
This email is not our usual storm warning.
WE OFFICIALLY DO NOT TRACK PACIFIC STORMS. (we do but not as thoroughly -- see Extreme Weather)
The name of this Pacific Ocean storm is ALETTA (they follow a different name convention for the Pacific).
The first named storm in the Atlantic/Caribbean/Gulf/Florida Hurricane alley will be called Alberto.
So here we go...
The bad news is we have the first storm of the season a week BEFORE the season officially starts in June 1st.
The good news is that is on the EASTERN PACIFIC, rather than in our ocean, the ATLANTIC OCEAN.
The bad news is that it is on the "other" side of Mexico (the Pacific) so if it crosses Mexico (eastbound) it would be in the Gulf.
The good news is that usually Pacific storms travel Westward not East. So chances are there's nothing to worry.
If you want to see the storm for yourself (and/or check out the new 2006 website features) you can do so from the site.
But if you want to go back to your beer, wine or soda or whatever you are enjoying in this Memorial day weekend, go ahead.
If you want to fool around with the site, here are some of the things you can see:
Go to the website ( www.hurricane.nario.com ) and from the home page:
1-Select Atlantic Watch to show you the storm (look for it on the west or "left" of Mexico.)
2- In the Satellite Imaging section, under the dedicated satellite views, check out the West Atlantic loop
or under the "Floater" loops check out #1which has been assigned/pointed to ALETTA.
3-If you are curious on the names, check out Storm Names.
All the links above are easily found in the Home page of www.hurricane.nario.com or subsequent pages.
Again, the good news is as of this writing, under any radar or satellites, nothing is headed for us... yet.
Back to the festivities, Happy Memorial Day.
